The Guidelines for General-Purpose Robotics, developed by the AI Alliance, were presented at the AI Journey international conference. The document outlines principles and recommendations that should be considered when creating and operating robots to ensure their ethical use and beneficial impact on society and humans.
The official signing ceremony for the Guidelines for General-Purpose Robotics took place on December 12. The first signatories were the Alpha Robotics Venture Fund, the Sber Robotics Center, the AIRI Institute, the Central Research and Development Institute of Robotics and Engineering Cybernetics (CRDI RTK), the National Association of Robotics Market Participants (NAURR), and the Android Technology Research and Production Association.
A general-purpose robot (GPR) is a versatile, multi-tasking robot capable of performing a wide range of tasks under given conditions. Such robots may appear in the foreseeable future with the advancement of artificial intelligence and robotics. GPRs are autonomous, capable of movement, perception of the environment, and interaction with people. GPRs will be able to perform hazardous work in manufacturing, serve customers, and even provide medical care. They will be useful in various fields with a large number of monotonous and routine tasks. The document also contains practical recommendations for the design, creation, and use of GPRs in accordance with ethical principles related to privacy and security, impact on employment and job placement, the level of autonomy of robots, and the assignment of responsibility for their actions.
The guidelines affirm the following approaches to robotics:
— human-centeredness;
— implementation that takes into account the rights and interests of workers;
— controllability and safety at all stages of the life cycle;
— transparency in the interpretation of AI algorithms;
— privacy and protection of personal data, and others.
The document was developed under the leadership of the Artificial Intelligence Alliance with the participation of an interdisciplinary team of experts and representatives from businesses, venture capital funds, leading Russian universities, and specialists from reputable research institutes. The AIRI Institute, Sber’s Robotics Center and Human-Centered AI Center, the Central Research Institute of Robotics and Complex Technologies, the Android Technology Research and Production Association, the Alpha Robotics Venture Fund, the Philosophy Faculty of Moscow State University, and the Innovative Jurisprudence Consortium participated in the document’s development.
